The Ultimate Entertainment Center

You take pride in inviting your friends over to your house on the weekends, and your home is now hailed as the hang out spot among your friend circle. The living room bustles with sounds coming from your television when your friends get together. However, you can’t help but feel like something is missing from these gatherings—could it be that your entertainment center is too dated? If you’re still not using a flat-screen television or you don’t own a set of speakers yet, then it’s time for an upgrade.

Don’t let your archaic entertainment center be the reason why your friends stop coming over. There are several ways to give your entertainment center a boost, such as investing in a new television with superior viewing angles and speakers to enhance music. Ultimate entertainment centers are comprised of modern, smart electronics and should look organized and elegant.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLAT SCREEN TV

Looking at flat-screen televisions can be intimidating, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the terminology and latest specs. Selecting the right TV for you depends on how frequent you’ll be watching shows and your personal needs. Start by considering who will be using this TV. Will it be just you? Do you have a spouse or children who take turns watching TV? By answering these questions, you’ll determine if it’s necessary to go for a TV with streaming capabilities and Wi-Fi connectivity. This will also help you decide which screen size to go with. To determine the best television size, consider your room’s dimensions, planned audience seating size, and your room’s arrangement.

Next, you’ll need to determine your cost range. Costs of televisions vary greatly based on their features, technology, and picture performance. The saying “you get what you pay for” reigns true when purchasing a television; at the same time, don’t feel pressured to invest in a 4K resolution TV if you’re not hosting extravagant parties every weekend and are looking for simplicity. There’s now a wide range of technology that can enhance picture quality such as 4K resolution, High Dynamic Range (HDR), processing type, expanded colors, and even the way an LED is backlit.

Remember plasma televisions? While those were popular a decade ago, now the two main technologies for today’s TVs are LED (or backlit LCD) and OLED (organic light-emitting diode). Although all of this might sound confusing right now, it’s best to go into the store well-researched so that you don’t end up buying too much technology that you don’t personally need.

AMPLIFY THE FUN WITH SPEAKERS

Speakers are another entertainment center must-have, and they will bring out the best in your favorite music and movies. Before you go shopping for speakers, consider how much sound you really need. If you don’t have much space for a full system of speakers, you can go for a soundbar instead. Do you need a system primarily for audio, or for movies and TV? Once you figure out your audio needs, you can decide what sort of setup you need.

For the most straightforward room setup, you’ll be just fine without a separate receiver by selecting powered speakers with inputs that directly connect to a turntable and other devices. More than likely, though, your speakers will require a receiver to power them. In this case, you’ll need to make sure that your speakers and receiver pair well together. If you take on the complicated task of matching speakers to a receiver on your own, you’ll need to give extra attention to the speaker’s impedance. Generally, speakers with a lower rating of 4 ohms will require a more powerful receiver. On the other hand, 8-ohm speakers, which are the most common, will work well with most receivers.

A receiver is far more than just a hub that connects your system. Quality receivers can help ensure that you hear the best possible sound from your speakers. Receivers should complement your speakers.

Most importantly, do not make the common mistake of confusing watts with loudness. You’re better off purchasing more efficient speakers with lower wattage than less efficient speakers with higher wattage.

SETTING EVERYTHING UP

Once you’ve invested in the right entertainment gear, it’s time to tie everything together neatly. If you want to hear the best sound, take some time to set up the speaker placement just right. Plan to spend extra time rearranging your furniture. As tempting as this may seem, don’t place your speakers directly up against a wall. Instead, angle your speakers toward the main spot where you plan on sitting. Do not make your speakers face forward. Depending on the type of speakers you own, you may want to raise them off the floor using stands or angle them upwards slightly.

Speaker placement will also determine the type of speaker wire you’ll need. Unlike an HDMI cable that’s transmitting digital information, an analog speaker wire will affect the sound. Don’t worry about having to splurge on super heavy gauge wire, but don’t cut corners. A good rule of thumb to follow in the electronics world is the longer your runs of speaker wires are, the thicker they must be.

Make your entertainment center the ultimate space where you’ll have fun spending some much-needed time with yourself or with your friends and family. Entertainment centers should be spaces where you can sit back and unwind. Creating your room into a comfortable experience should not be stressful.
